Understanding the impact of Connected, Automated, and Shared Vehicles

The emerging mobility technologies are reshaping the transportation systems. In this project, we are interested in how the connected, automated and shared vehicles can reshape the transportation systems.

  • Automated Vehicles (AV): Combining a wide spectrum of cutting-edge technologies, autonomous vehicles (AVs) are destined to fundamentally change and reform the mobility system. AVs have great potential in improving safety and mobility, reducing fuel consumption and emission, and redefining the civil infrastructure systems such as road networks, parking spaces, and public transit systems.
  • Ride-sourcing Vehicle (RV): With the boom of smartphones and mobile Internet, on-demand ride-sourcing services are emerging and becoming an indispensable component of urban transportation systems. The on-demand ride-sourcing service refers to a service mode that private car owners drive their own vehicles to provide for-hire rides, and the service is usually operated by transportation network companies (TNCs) such as Uber, Lyft and DiDi chuxing. TNCs match the riders and drivers in real-time and instruct drivers to pick-up and drop-off riders through a real-time routing mechanism. According to a recent report, Uber alone has covered 551 cities globally and surpassed two billion rides by July 2016.
